too. The best wish I could give you, Mr. Copperfield, and give all of you gentlemen, is, that you could be took up and brought here. When I think of my past follies, and my present state, I am sure it would be best for you. I pity all who ain't brought here!' ¡¡¡¡He sneaked back into his cell, amidst a little chorus of approbation; and both Traddles and I experienced a great relief when he was locked in. ¡¡¡¡It was a characteristic feature in this repentance,
that I was fain to ask what these two men had done, to be there at all. That appeared to be the last thing about which they had anything to say. I addressed myself to one of the two warders, who, I suspected from certain latent indications in their faces, knew pretty well what all this stir was worth. ¡¡¡¡'Do you know,' said I, as we walked along the passage, 'what felony was Number Twenty Seven's last "folly"?' ¡¡¡¡The answer was that it was a Bank case.

'He was a brute to you, Traddles,' said I, indignantly; for his good humour made me feel as if I had seen him beaten but yesterday. ¡¡¡¡'Do you think so?' returned Traddles. 'Really? Perhaps he was rather. But it's all over, a long while. Old Creakle!' ¡¡¡¡'You were brought up by an uncle, then?' said I. ¡¡¡¡'Of course I was!' said Traddles. 'The one I was always going to write to. And always didn't, eh! Ha, ha, ha! Yes, I had an uncle then. He died soon after I left school.
¡¡¡'Indeed!' ¡¡¡¡'Yes. He was a retired - what do you call it! - draper - cloth-merchant - and had made me his heir. But he didn't like me when I grew up.' ¡¡¡¡'Do you really mean that?' said I. He was so composed, that I fancied he must have some other meaning'Oh dear, yes, Copperfield! I mean it,' replied Traddles. 'It was an unfortunate thing, but he didn't like me at all. He said I wasn't at all what he expected, and so he married his housekeeper.' ¡¡¡¡'And what did you do?' I asked.

'You have never been to school,' I said, 'have you?' 'Oh yes! Every day.' ¡¡¡¡'Ah, but you mean here, at your own home?' ¡¡¡¡'Papa couldn't spare me to go anywhere else,' she answered, smiling and shaking her head. 'His housekeeper must be in his house, you know.' ¡¡¡¡'He is very fond of you, I am sure,' I said. ¡¡¡¡She nodded 'Yes,' and went to the door to listen for his coming up, that she might meet him on the stairs. But, as he was not there, she came back again.
¡¡'Mama has been dead ever since I was born,' she said, in her quiet way. 'I only know her picture, downstairs. I saw you looking at it yesterday. Did you think whose it was?' ¡¡¡¡I told her yes, because it was so like herself. ¡¡¡¡'Papa says so, too,' said Agnes, pleased. 'Hark! That's papa now!' ¡¡¡¡Her bright calm face lighted up with pleasure as she went to meet him, and as they came in, hand in hand. He greeted me cordially; and told me I should certainly be happy under Doctor Strong, who was one of the gentlest of men.
